If you’re new in town and need to know about trash pickup, water connection, utilities, cable and all the other odds and ends that come with moving, here’s a short list of helpful numbers.
County services
• County of Santa Clara – Office of the County Executive, 70 W. Hedding St., 11th Fl., San Jose; 408-299-5105; www.sccgov.org. Visit the county’s Web site for information on animal adoption, permits and licenses, education, reporting neighborhood problems and information on county parks and local attractions.
• Santa Cruz County – County Administrative Office, 701 Ocean St., Santa Cruz; 831-454-2000; www.co.santa-cruz.ca.us. The Web site offers a number of services online including road closures, review and pay property tax bills, county parks online registration and beach and bay advisories.
• San Benito County – County Administration Building, 481 4th St, 1st Fl., Hollister. 831-636-4000; www.san-benito.ca.us. Check the Web site for the county calendar, emergency services, county departments, library information and more.
Utilities
Also check with your city’s government because many cities have their own public works departments.
• County of Santa Cruz Department of Public Works – 701 Ocean St., Rm. 410, Santa Cruz; 831-454-2160; www.co.santa-cruz.ca.us. Includes information on sanitation districts, solid waste and recycling and storm water management.
• County of Santa Clara Hazardous Waste Program – www.hhw.org. Web site offers information on what is considered hazardous waste and how to dispose of it properly and safely.
• Norcal Waste Systems – 160 Pacific Ave., Ste. 200, San Francisco; 800-652-1275, 415-875-1000, 408-576-0057; www.norcalwaste.com. The parent to companies providing all facets of solid waste management – collection, recycling, transfer and landfill operations. Go online to view a complete list of all their companies, including Los Altos Garbage Company, Foothill Disposal, South Valley Disposal & Recycling, Stevens Creek Disposal & Recycling and NWS of San Benito County.
• Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) – 800-743-5000; www.pge.com. One of the largest combination natural gas and electric utilities in the United States that serves approximately 15 million residents in northern and central California.
• Recycle Plus – 408-277-2700; 800-533- 8414; www.sjrecycles.org. Provides recycling services to San Jose homes, multifamily residences, parks, airport and Convention Center, and offers up-to-date recycling information.
• Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission of Santa Clara County – www.reducewaste.org. The Web site features a list of links to curbside recycling and garbage pickup for various cities in Santa Clara County, as well as a junk mail reduction guide, information on landfill and transfer stations and garage sale information.
• Santa Clara County Water District (SCCWD) – 5750 Almaden Expwy., San Jose; 408-265-2600; www.valleywater.org. The primary water resources agency for Santa Clara County for clean, safe water for homes and businesses, as well as flood protection and the steward for streams, creeks, underground aquifers and district-built reservoirs.
• San Jose Water Company – 374 W. Santa Clara St., San Jose; 408-279-7900; www.sjwater.com. Founded in 1866, San Jose Water is the largest urban water system in the United States.

• MCI Telecommunications – 888-MCILOCAL (624-5622); www.mci.com. Now joined by Verizon, MCI offers local and long distance plans, high-speed Internet, international plans, prepaid calling cards and more.
Television & cable providers
