More than 30 hands-on exhibits that explore how computer chips are developed and manufactured, and how they change the way we work, play, learn and communicate.

Interactive displays and exhibits focused on Mars, the Exploration Rover mission and Ames’ scientific and engineering roles in Mars missions both past and present. Free.

• UCO/Lick Observatory – Take Alum Rock east to 7299 Mount Hamilton Rd., San Jose; 408-274-5061; www.ucolick.org. Monday-Friday, 12:30-5pm and Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm. Enjoy a brief guided tour, view through telescopes and enjoy a summer concert series. Free.

• Seymour Marine Discovery Center – Long Marine Lab, end of Delaware Ave., Santa Cruz; 831-459-3800; http://seymourcenter.ucsc.edu. Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm and Sunday, noon-5pm. Working marine laboratory that features exhibit halls, an aquarium and touch tanks.
MONTEREY COUNTY
• Fremont Peak State Park Observatory – Off Hwy. 156 (11 miles south of San Juan Bautista) on San Juan Canyon Rd.; 831-623-2465; www.parks.ca.gov. Programs on moonless Saturday evenings, 8pm (Apr.-Oct.). Astronomical observatory has a 30-inch telescope that is open for public programs on select evenings.
• Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary – Ridge Rd., Pacific Grove; 831-648-5716; www.pgmuseum.org. Each winter, thousands of monarch butterflies cluster together on the pines and eucalyptus of the sanctuary and stay from October to February until they join the spring Monarch migration. Free.
• Monterey Bay Whale Watch – 84 Fisherman’s Wharf, Monterey; 831-375-4658; www.montereybaywhalewatch.com. Year-round whale watching trips to view the diversity and abundance of dolphins and whales that inhabit the Bay.
