• Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose – 180 Woz Way, San Jose; 408-298-5437; www.cdm.org. Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm and Sunday, noon-5pm. A place for learning for children and their families with more than 28,000 square-feet of semi-permanent and traveling exhibits.

• Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History – 1005 Railroad Ave., Santa Clara; 408-243-3969; www.sbhrs.org. Railroad museum, with artifacts, displays and train layouts in an historic depot.
• Forbes Mill Annex – History Museum – 75 Church St., Los Gatos; 408-395-7375; www.town.los-gatos.ca.us. Recognized as the first commercial building in Los Gatos, the museum features exhibits of historical artifacts.
• Gilroy Museum – 195 Fifth St., Gilroy; 408-846-0446; www.ci.gilroy.ca.us. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10am-5pm and first Saturday of each month, 10am-2pm. Housed in the historic 1910 Carnegie Library Building, the museum features labeled and interpretive exhibits. Free.
• Harris-Lass House Museum – 1889 Market St., Santa Clara; 408-249-7905; www.harrislass.org. Most weekends, noon-4pm. Showcases farm life in Santa Clara from the late 1890s through the 1930s.
• Headen-Inman House – Triton Museum grounds, Don Ave., Santa Clara; 408-248-ARTS (2787); www.ci.santa-clara.ca.us. Sunday, 1-4pm. Features photographs and artifacts related to the history of Santa Clara, as well as rotating exhibits by the Santa Clara Art Association. Free.

• Los Gatos Museum – W. Main St. and Tait Ave., Los Gatos; 408-395-7375; www.MuseumsofLosGatos.org. Wednesday-Sunday, noon-4pm. Natural history and art displays in the city’s first fire station. Free.
• Museum of American Heritage – 351 Homer Ave., Palo Alto; 650-321-1004; www.moah.org. Friday-Sunday, 11am-4pm. Visit a 1920s kitchen, an early 20th century store, radio repair shop of the 1940s and historic gardens. Free.
• Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium – 1342 Naglee Ave., San Jose; 408-947-3636; www.egyptianmuseum.org. Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm and Saturday and Sunday, 11am-6pm. Tour and discover the mysteries of ancient Egypt.
• Saratoga Historical Foundation Museum – 20450 Saratoga-Los Gatos Rd., Saratoga; 408-867-4311; www.saratogahistory.com. Friday-Sunday, 1-4pm. Museum in one of the city’s oldest commercial buildings.
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY
• Aptos History Museum – 7605-A Old Dominion Court, Aptos; 831-688-1467; www.aptoschamber.com. Open daily, 10am-4pm. Artifacts and photos depicting the history of Aptos, from the Native American Indians to the earthquake.
• Capitola Historical Museum – 410 Capitola Ave., Capitola; 831-464-0322; www.capitolamuseum.org. Wednesday and Friday-Sunday, noon-4pm. Photographs and artifacts related to Capitola’s history.
• Davenport Jail Museum – 2 Davenport Ave., Davenport; 831-429-1964; www.santacruzmah.org. Call for hours. Used only once before being abandoned in 1936, it is now a museum housing a permanent exhibit exploring aspects of North Coast life
• The Museum of Art & History – McPherson Center, 705 Front St., Santa Cruz; 831-429-1964; www.santacruzmah.org. Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-5pm. Offers four galleries on three floors with exhibits and family programs such as Family Art Saturdays and family festivals.
• Santa Cruz Surfing Museum – Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, Lighthouse Point, 701 W. Cliff Dr., Santa Cruz; 831-420-6289; www.santacruzsurfingmuseum.org. Thursday-Monday, noon-4pm. Traces more than 100 years of surfing history in Santa Cruz through photos, surfboards and other interesting items. Free.
• San Lorenzo Valley Historical Museum – 12547 Hwy. 9, Boulder Creek; 831-338-8382; www.slvmuseum.com. Wednesday, Friday-Sunday, noon-4pm. Features an early 1900’s kitchen, a blacksmith exhibit, a logging exhibit and an early 1900’s parlor.

• John Steinbeck’s Spirit of Monterey Wax Museum – 700 Cannery Row, Ste. 2, Monterey; 831-375-3770; www.wax-museum.com. Features more than 100 life-sized wax figures that take visitors through 450 years of Monterey’s past.
• Monterey County Agricultural & Rural Life Museum – San Lorenzo County Park, 1160 Broadway, King City; 831-385-8020; http://mcarlm.org. Features a blacksmith shop, exhibit barn, historic structures, turn-of-the-century artifacts and outside exhibits of antique farm equipment.
• MY Museum – 425 Washington St., Monterey; 831-649-6444; www.mymuseum.org. Monday-Saturday (closed on Wednesday), 10am-5pm and Sunday, noon-5pm. Designed particularly for ages 8 and under, this 2,700 square-foot museum features hands-on, interactive experiences such as the magnet table and water blocks.
• National Steinbeck Center – One Main St., Salinas; 831-775-4721; www.steinbeck.org. Daily, 10am-5pm. Explore the works of John Steinbeck through interactive exhibits for all ages.
• Maritime Museum of Monterey – 5 Custom House Plaza, Monterey; 831-372-2608; www.montereyhistory.org. Tuesday-Sunday. 10am-5pm. Learn about the explorers who shaped Monterey and the nation’s history through 6,000 artifacts, more than 50,000 photographs and special exhibits. Free.
• Presidio Museum – Corporal Ewing Rd., Bldg. 113, Presidio of Monterey; 831-646-3456; www.monterey.org/museum/pom. Monday, 10am-1pm; Thursday-Saturday, 10am-4pm; and Sunday 1-4pm. Exhibits lead visitors through Monterey’s various stages of military development.
